Is a unique variant of preeclampsia the letters stand for:
- H – Haemolysis - the breaking down of red blood cells
- EL -Elevated liver enzymes - thought to be due to secondary obstruction of the blood flow
- LP -Low Platelet Count - is due to the destruction of the platelets (these play an important role in blood clotting)
It occurs in later stages of pregnancy and present with vague symptoms of tiredness, headaches, stomach pains, vomiting and nausea(feeling sick).
