This is the product of a fertilized egg which has failed to develop properly- It is described as a mole of which there are two types:
- Complete mole – which is where there is no foetus at all just fluid filled cysts and tissue
- Partial mole – which is where there is tissue resembling that found in a foetus but that could not survive
