| Description: |
Air in the pleural space (between the chest wall and lungs) causing the lung to collapse. It is usually due to injury i.e. stabbing wound, but can be due to scuba diving without experience. The most common occurs in fit young males who for no apparent reason have what’s called a spontaneous pneumothorax – this is known as a closed pneumothorax. Symptoms include tightness of the chest; with breathlessness usually it is not painful.
