This term covers a broad spectrum of abnormalities in the arterial supply to the brain stem. They usually affect people over the age of 70. The cause is usually due to the narrowing or blockage of the arteries and is more common among patients with cardiovascular disease. People, who are obese, smoke, use oral contraceptives, are diabetes or who have high blood pressure are at more risk.
