This is due to vitamin A deficiency and general malnutrition, one of the first symptoms is night blindness, and then extreme dryness of the eyes clouding and softening of the cornea (transparent membrane of the eye)the development of oval or triangular spots - Bitot's spots, if the condition is not treated it can lead to blindness.
