Norwegian scabies

Also known as crusted scabies, this is an infestation of the scabies mite which occurs mainly in people whose immune systems are compromised or people who are of the older generation. The mites’ numbers in this infestation runs into thousands on the one body causing areas of crusting. It is extremely contagious owing to the vast numbers of mites involved which causes thickening of the skin surface which looks like patchy yellow flakes of skin.

Treatment:

Treatment is a topical medication or cream which covers the whole skin surface of the body. The soles of the feet in between toes under nail everywhere needs to be treated, if hands are washed after the application of the cream they will need to have more cream on. The treatment lotion can be left on from 12-24hrs hours depending on the medication being used.

Unfortunately even after treatment you may still suffer from the itching, this can continue for up to four weeks afterwards.

All household members /sexual partners should all be treated at the same time; the symptoms can take up to six weeks to appear

All clothing and bed linen, towels etc need to be hot washed and dried in a dryer the heat is needed to kill the mites. If you have items which you can’t wash place them in a sealed container or sealed bag and leave them for a minimum of a week before using again. Vacuum everything in the house beds, three piece suite etc to remove the mites and then throw away the bag and contents.
